High data rate transmission in high resolution radio astronomy - vlbiGRID

چکیده
Recent developments in Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) radio astronomy are aimed at improving reliability and reducing the cost of operations by moving from a custom made tape based system to using exchangeable disks in PCs. The advent of the iGRID 2002 exhibition in September 2002 with the availability of high data rate international links gave us the opportunity to try transferring the data via the internet. This would not only test the capacity of the links but also prove the viability of the use of the internet for VLBI. This development would also eventually lead to instant turn-around of VLBI data, which currently stands at several weeks. The tests were successful achieving data rates from Manchester of 500 Mbps over the production network. This was the first demonstration of fibreoptic link connected international VLBI.

High Rate Internet Data Transfer for eVLBI
Very Long Baseline interferometry (VLBI) is a well established technique in radio astronomy for the study of celestial sources at high angular resolution. VLBI is gradually moving to the point where Gbps data rates are becoming routine. A number of experiments have shown that the internet can be used at data rates of several hundred Mbps on production networks. However the use of switched light...

Context. Two main classes of imaging algorithms have emerged in radio interferometry: the CLEAN algorithm and its multiple variants, and compressed-sensing inspired methods. They are both discrete in nature, and estimate source locations and intensities on a regular grid. For the traditional CLEAN-based imaging pipeline, the resolution power of the tool is limited by the width of the synthesize...
متن کاملW.n. Christiansen and the Development of the Solar Grating Array
By 1950 the C.S.I.R.O’s Division of Radiophysics was emerging as a leader in solar radio astronomy. Early observations at radio frequencies were hampered by a lack of angular resolution. In seeking a method to produce regular high-resolution observations W.N. Christiansen devised the solar grating array. This unique instrument was constructed on the banks of the Potts Hill water supply reservoi...
متن کاملForty Years of X-Ray Binaries
In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...
متن کاملH 53 α observations of the central region of the Super Star Cluster
We present observations in the H53α line and radio continuum at 43 GHz carried out with the VLA in the D array (2 angular resolution) toward the starburst galaxy NGC 5253. VLA archival data have been reprocessed to produce a uniform set of 2, 1.3 and 0.7 cm high angular (0. 2 × 0. 1) radio continuum images. The RRL H53α, a previously reported measurement of the H92α RRL flux density and the rep...
